Adding Context to the Content

General International Standard Archival Description, ISAD(G), finding aids exist for each of the NDAI collections so these were used to create Metadata Object Description Schema, MODS, records. As a result the records at collection level were comprehensive with item level records having fewer fields.

The scale of the Archive also impacted on the depth of description which could be given to each item. While fuller subject descriptions were used for collection level records, fewer, more generic subjects were used for items. VIAF (name) and FAST (subject) authority files were searched if specific terms were not available from the Library of Congress Authorities. The Getty Art & Architecture Thesaurus was used for form terms. Technical metadata (generated automatically at capture) was also kept.
